Energized Transformer Restoration
PROTECTIVE COATINGS OF DISTRIBUTION EQUIPMENT
The following information covers the procedures we use for insulator cleaning and protective coatings. We have performed this service safely, in utilities and industrial facilities, for numerous years.
PERSONNEL
Our Application Engineers are professionally trained, so that our services can be performed safely. We are not commercial sandblasters and painters. Commercial companies or individuals are not qualified to work on, or around, energized distribution equipment.
PAINTING SPECIFICATIONS
PPM uses numerous types of specialized coatings, depending on your environmental conditions, unless otherwise specified. We use an industrial enamel manufactured by Sherwin Williams®. The primer consists of a universal industrial enamel with an added rust inhibitor. The additional rust inhibitor is added in the field by our Application Engineers. The universal enamel primer is applied to the entire surface, approximately three mils dry. The top coat consists of an ALKYD enamel which is applied to the total surface approximately four mils dry.
PREPARATION
All structures, enclosures, and transformers receive a commercial particle blast. The particle blasting of this equipment consists of Anderson's® Pre-Dried grit cob and pulverized limestone. All equipment, prior to any coating, is blown off with compressed air.
INSULATOR CLEANING
Insulators are cleaned with Anderson's® pre-dried grit cob and pulverized limestone until a uniform glossy effect is produced.
VEHICLES
PPM uses dielectricly tested HI-Ranger bucket trucks to perform our services. These aerial devices are tested quarterly, to verify their dielectric strength.
AIRLESS SYSTEMS
We use only airless spray equipment to apply all coatings. These pumps have a operating range of 1500 to 3200 P.S.I. to minimize the amount of overspray. The fluid tips are designed to break down a direct stream of fluid to avoid any tracking.
INSULATED WAND
We use only dielectric tested fiberglass wands to apply our coatings. These insulated wands are specifically designed and manufactured by PPM. The wands are puncture proof at pressures in excess of 3200 P.S.I.. They are solvent resistant and are non-conductive.
CLEAN-UP
The work area is cleaned of all empty paint containers, blasting debris, masking tape etc, at the completion of daily activities. All scaffolding and ladders are either laid down, or properly secured to assure safety in the work environment.
OVERSPRAY
PPM takes all necessary actions to prevent the overspray of vehicles, buildings and other surrounding equipment. If needed, enclosures are built around the equipment to be painted prior to blasting or spraying. Structures are hand scraped and brush painted, if enclosures are not feasible. We strongly suggest that all vehicles be moved, while the blasting and spraying is being performed.
SCOPE OF WORK
- All fans, gauges, and nameplates etc, are either removed or have adequate protections against particle blasting and painting.
- After the particle blasting is performed, all debris is thoroughly cleaned-up prior to painting. All control boxes and enclosure doors are opened and vacuumed if possible. The surrounding concrete slabs are protected from overspray with tarps.
- If needed, enclosures are fabricated around the equipment to be painted. The work area is secured with caution tape and barriers.
- All enclosures, interior hinges, and doors are thoroughly primed and top coated. If needed, new gaskets are installed for a weather tight seal.
- All paint is applied in a uniform manner free of runs and sags to give a premium finish.
